Deakin Chemistry Education Professional Learning communities (DeCEPL)

Update: The link to the 2022 EOI is here

With financial support from the Chemistry Education Association (CEA), we have organised an innovative chemistry education focused professional learning opportunity, that is free for chemistry teachers.

Despite COVID-19, the 2020 and 2021 professional learning cohorts went ahead, and is keeping strong for 2022 onwards.

Current secondary chemistry teachers are supported to co-design a classroom activity with peers and the project team, incorporating the latest chemistry education research (CER) evidence of how best to enhance critical thinking on important socio-scientific issues in Chemistry.

Over the course of a school year, two days of professional learning take place (along with some online check-ins and school visits if feasible), with a cohort of 10-15 Chemistry teachers per year. The program focusses on three sequential areas of professional learning.

With extensive support from the project team and in a group of peers, in between these workshops, the participating teachers collect evidence from their respective classrooms on the impact of the classroom activity. Teachers are supported to take an active role in reporting these findings to the chemistry and science education community, encouraging them to take a future role in conducting professional development, either in their own schools or in chemistry or science education learning communities.
