About

Elements of Sustainable Chemistry (ESC) is an interdisciplinary research hub based at Deakin University, Australia. We are Chemistry and Education lecturers and researchers who have a shared passion and commitment to promote the vital role of chemical sciences in addressing global socio-scientific issues including sustainable development.

We collaborate with national and international partners to develop and test teaching and learning resources for primary, secondary and tertiary education settings.

We also facilitate professional learning workshops around themes such as systems thinking, the circular economy, life cycle analysis, sustainable development, and how these relate to chemistry education. Our range of professional learning opportunities is expanding.

To celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table, we developed, organised and ran the Periodic Table of Sustainable Elements (PTSE) school outreach project. The Periodic Table of Sustainable Elements received grant funding from the Commonwealth Government through the Australian National Commission for UNESCO.

Financial support was also received through an interdisciplinary establishment grant from Deakin University’s Science and Society Network (SSN).
